Structural Probing and Investigation

Exposing foundations, footings, piles, and below-grade structural elements for engineering design.

Test pit excavation in progress
Overview

Seylone provides structural probing services across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic to expose existing foundations, footings, grade beams, pile caps, retaining walls, and concealed structural elements for engineering review. Probing gives the engineer-of-record direct access to what's below grade and behind the wall — replacing assumptions and incomplete record drawings with measured, observed conditions.

Crews work in interior spaces, crawl spaces, basements, cellars, mechanical rooms, elevator pits, sidewalk vaults, and exterior grade-level conditions. Foundation exposure includes spread footings, continuous footings, mat foundations, pile caps, and grade beams — selectively excavated to provide stable, safe openings for the duration of the engineer's on-site inspection. Shoring and bracing of adjacent structural elements is provided as required.

Common applications include building modifications, additions, underpinning design, adjacent construction investigations, tenant fit-outs, renovations, and due-diligence assessments. Probing is performed under occupied-building protocols when required, with dust control, surface protection, and finishes restoration to minimize disruption to building operations. Photographic documentation of exposed conditions is maintained for the project record.

Seylone works as a specialty subcontractor to structural engineering firms and as a direct contractor to building owners, developers, and construction managers. The structural engineer-of-record performs all observation, measurement, and engineering interpretation; Seylone's role is precise, controlled exposure of the structure they need to see.
